The Dex Factor

IN : Can you repeat…

This is Kripp’s story (this is her nickname, she didn’t wish to use her real name) about navigating daily life with ADHD. She invites us into her ‘brain labyrinth’ for an intimate sojourn about her life pre and post treatment with prescribed Dexamphetamines.

PITCH

Mental health is omnipresent in todays society and this audio narrative is an opportunity to explore one persons raw account of how this affects their life. As Kripp’s is a naturally humorous person, I wanted to play into her disposition and portray her story in a way that’s both informal and introspective yet succinctly deliver three dimensionality and “radio intimacy” (Spinelli et al. 2019, pg 79) within the time constraints. This idea of creating a more “immodest and indiscrete”(Spinelli et. al, 2019, pg 85) atmosphere plays well for this story and the podcasting genre as Kripp’s felt free to describe her dexampetamines as her morning meth and speak in her own authentic manner.

Where radio might suggest and allude, podcasting is full frontal. This medium can be so utterly immersive, inviting the listener into the immediate within moments. I aimed to invoke an informal and fun tone and set up the teaser at the start akin to JJJ Hack where they have the teaser up front to anchor the listener into what’s to come but not give it all away.

I sought to shape my audio narrative more in alignment with This American life, so that I could immerse the listener into Kripp’s world momentarily. This podcast uses unobtrusive music and often sets up the story with tidbits of information to hook the listener and I sought to replicate this structure as it played well with the ADHD ideology of confusing mind space where the person often trails off or forgets the original question, which happened during the interview.

My producer friend very generously remixed the Kath and Kim title track, The Joker, with a slightly pensive and esoteric beat which serves the material well and alludes to the disjointed depth of Kripp’s psyche pre medication. Ultimately this track backs up Kripp’s story as she uses humour to depict her story and creates relatability and people recognise it as the title track from Kath and Kim. As it is professionally remixed, it circumnavigate’s the copyright. My ATMOS included a TikTok teaser, an A.I explanation of Dexamphetamines and found sound from my own backyard (mowing, cleaning, weeding etc.)

I think this tale bodes well with the “Brain” genre of the Mountains to the Sea podcast, and is certainly something that could be reworked as a Chat cast style as well for A3. I have been enjoying Abbie Chatfeilds podcast as a break away from my news content heavy listening style. This podcast could go in multiple directions as I have alot of content; as Jennifer Lacey says, “Make your curiosity your motor.”

Please enjoy.
