Decarbonisation Pitch

‘How do we flourish as a society in the future and make a conscious effort to act? Futures studies is not omniscient and thus is uncertain but that doesn’t just mean we prepare for the worst.’

Ok, so you watched the video. You get the gist of where I’m coming from, now how do I get you to come along on my Sea Quest?

We know that media moves the world and we have seen visionary tales of our future portrayed across the decades in various mediums and there is commonality here; a bleak, technology Centric, desolate planet.

So how do we find the signal in all this noise?

We embrace our cyber culture, create positive feedback loops and cast our imagination net wide. I am going to explore aquaculture namely seaweed technologies that have proven real world effects at decarbonising our planet. Here’s some fun resources!

Seaweed is able to capture nutrients from waste streams, utilise this and inherently create food all whilst capturing carbon. The most exciting part of seaweed farming at the moment is viability as a food source, especially in comparison to things like wheat, which are land and resource (water) dense. That’s pretty neat.

The above is a statement from Jo Kelly who runs South Coast seaweed and highlights Australia’s biggest problem in this industry. Government has been slow to embrace seaweed farming especially in comparison to global counterparts and with an extensive coast line, Australia has the ability to be a huge producer! my goal is to connect with Phycohealth and show you how this seaweed biz works.

Here’s my production timetable so you can see what’s shaking …

I’m not a tech native, so I am open to all idea’s about what kind of content is engaging and what motivates you to watch. My goal is to create an engaging seaweed campaign that might even get some attention from the big dogs that govern this little island we live on.

I am passionate about this project because I believe we, the media makers can alter our collective perspective on the future and weave a future we all want to be a part of.

    Amazing job this sounds amazing! I love your plan and think the podcast is a great idea and then putting it on social media. Our seaweed is important to protect as it has so many benefits for the environment. I live on the water in the Sutherland Shire and have seaweed at the front, their are lots of rules and regulations that we have to comply with so feel free to email me if you need an more information or you could probably get in touch with the Sutherland shire marine services. GOODJOB!

      Hi Lily! Thanks for your response, Kelp preservation is extremely important and I’m relieved to hire the shire council is onboard with this ethos. I know there are groups around Sydney reseeding golden kelp populations so I wonder if that’s happening near you.

    First of all, that AI video is EPIC! Such a unique way to deliver your pitch. I really like your idea for a DA. It is a really interesting take on the subject material which I commend you for. You have clearly outlined your production timetable which will make it easier for your audience to keep up to date.

    Have you decided what social media platform you will be using yet? I might sound really stupid right now but I am not aware of ‘Anthropo Zine’ so I think that could have been made a little clearer for people who have no prior knowledge on this topic! I know that a combination of Instagram and TikTok has worked for me in the past and could be a recipe for success!

    Hi Jane,

    Wow, what a cool way to share information for your pitch! I am also doing my DA on seaweed, kelp specifically.
    You have a great understanding of a niche method of decarbonisation. However, it was unclear to me specifically what your DA will be. I can see in your production timeline there is a podcast and an Instagram as a marketing campaign; however, maybe you could refine your target audience through finding a gap to educate people or educate industries.

    FutureFeed is the development of a feed supplement for cattle that can reduce their methane during digestion. Methane is a greenhouse gas that contributes significantly to global warming. Through understanding and researching this, you could use your platform to educate farmers to convert to seaweed as consumption for their livestock.

    Hey Jane!
    I love the topic you have become involved with; it is so cool to see how seaweed holds a variety of roles in the ocean.

    Creating social media pages will really help you further your research, what sites are you planning on using? I have found Instagram has really helped me gain a wide following as my content has been shared and reposted through other accounts.

    Are you going to further your research rather than solely on the South Coast region? I think this could be a helpful way to find out the methods of other carbon capturers. I have found a website which targets the areas in Norway, focusing on the growth of seaweed and their processes

    Hi Jane! What a cool DA on the usefulness of seaweed and its potential as a solution for working towards decarbonisation and GGEs! I can see you are well versed on this topic and it is a very thoughtful DA topic and solution for decarbonisation with a wide range of uses.

    In your video, I was a bit confused by your reference to the AnthropoZine, and had to pause to look into it. Are you using their blog and socials as inspiration for your own multi-platform content for your DA? It would be useful to clarify exactly which social media sites you will be utilising so we know where to look to find, follow and share your work.

    Seaweed farming could be further connected to the subject content by linking it to the solarpunk movement. Your DA fits well within the solarpunk movement’s ethos of embracing a brighter, more hopeful future that prioritizes sustainability and social justice. By showcasing how seaweed farming fits into the solarpunk narrative, you could engage a broader audience interested in sustainable and futuristic solutions. You could use AI-generated art as a creative way to raise awareness about the importance of sustainability and the impact of human activities on the planet. For instance, you could create a series of AI-generated images that depict the consequences of climate change, such as rising sea levels or ocean acidification, and how seaweed would help address these issues, to better educate your audience on its benefits.

    I highly enjoyed the creative way you presented your video using AI art and software, it was extremely clever and highly engaging! I think that with your solid knowledge and grasp of AI-generated content, you should definitely utilise it to propel your campaign even further into the eyes of the public (and the attention of those with the power to change policies).

    If you are advocating and spreading awareness of Phycohealth’s business, it may be easier to focus more exclusively on their range of products and general information about the uses of seaweed than to introduce another company like Young Henry’s into the mix.
